“Guardian of Poland with arrows protecting against the “black plague”
Mary in the image of Our Lady of Grace was given the title of “Guardian of Poland and Patroness of Warsaw” before King Casimir in Lviv Cathedral in front of another image of Our Lady of Grace placed the Polish nation under Mary’s rule, proclaiming her “Queen of the Polish Crown.” The Warsaw image of Our Lady of Grace Guardian of Poland has its prototype in the image of the Madonna of Faenza in Italy (Mater Gratiarum).
Mary is depicted there as a Shield (Palladium) against the plague, holding in her hands the broken arrows of “God’s wrath,” the arrows of all misfortune, evil and plague. She emerges from the golden clouds, dressed in a wide dark blue cloak, girded with a beautiful sash. She seems to protect her children with her spreading airy mantle.”
