Stanislaw Staszic’s bench in Pila

The bench of Stanislaw Staszic in Pila. Life-size sculpture by Dr. Norbert Sarnecki.

“The bench depicts the person of Stanislaw Staszic while browsing through the first edition of his work “Cautions for Poland” lifting his thoughtful gaze from over his reading towards the person who is squatting next to him. The author’s intention is that this gesture creates an interaction between the sculpture and the viewer, bringing the figure immortalized in bronze closer as a man who lived in a time distant era, but was the same man as his contemporaries. As Staszic was educated in Paris – he is dressed in French attire, a model from the year 1812. The structure of the bench on which the figure is depicted refers to the iconography of the Łazienki Gardens captured in watercolors by Zygmunt Vogel (from 1795), as well as the palace in Nieborów and others from that period.” – reads a communiqué from the Pila City Hall.
