Maria Papa Rostkowska was born in 1923 in Brwinów. In 1943 she married Ludwik Rostkowski. She took an active part in the Warsaw Uprising. In 1946 she began studying at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts in the studio of Felicjan Szczęsny Kowarski. In 1957 she emigrated to Paris, where she maintained contacts with the most prominent artists of the time – Chagall, Picasso, Ernst.
The artist’s son Nikolai Rostkowski says that after the war his mother decided not to show the traumas of war, but “to create art of happiness.”
